The party bike is a multi-passenger human powered vehicle, which was invented in 1997 by Het Fietscafe who is from the Netherlands. The party bike is also known as, beercycle, fietcycle, bierfiets, pedal crawler, pedal pub, beer bike, bar bike, pedal bar or bierbike.
The concept of party bikes were conceived when two men were looking for a new way to have fun and enjoy their time with friends. They were sitting in a bar in the early 90’s in the Netherlands by Zwier and Henk Van Laar when they overheard the pub owner grumbling about how he had to promote his business during an upcoming parade. The Van Laar brothers took their small idea and ran with it. Thus the idea of a rolling, ride along pub was born in 1996. Now the brother just needed to build and announce it. It received such a positive response that they quickly started manufacturing party bikes and distributing them across all of Europe.
In 2007, the first party bus was brought to the United States.Turns out that Americans loved the concept of creatively drinking as well because party buses grew in popularity within the United States and Pedal Crawler began manufacturing its own party bikes here in the USA in 2013. Robert Mayer of Pedal Crawler saw the opportunity and went for it just as the Van Laar brothers had. Pedal Crawler improved the original party bike design and started its own party bike manufacturing company. With all the bells and whistles added to the original concept of the party bike, the craze grew and spread. Pedal Crawler added speakers and LED lights as well as an electric motor to assist, taking the party bike experience to the next level.
In only a few short years the craze went from city to city in the United States with at least one bike tour operating in every major city in the country. The gist of a party bus tour is to grab 10 to 15 of your closest friends for a two hour tour with stops at popular bars along the way and a BYO beer or wine policy for most tour companies. Usually cups and non-alcoholic drinks are provided upon request. Most party bikes prohibit hard liquors and costs range from city to city and company to company. Our pedal bike cost $450 for the entire rig, which is approximately $40 per personal seat.
Party bikes are extremely safe so long as everyone plays their part and all party bikes include a well trained driver for the tours. Jumping off or high levels of intoxication can cause injury or harm to those who choose to partake in those kinds of actions. There are rules given to those who partake in the party bike tours before beginning and as long as those are followed there is very limited risk to any kind of injury large or minor.
You can visit your favorite cities and enjoy the great fall weather while riding on a party bike. It’s a great way to get around the city and no one has to worry about being the designated driver or calling cabs to take you from place to place. It is a fun, safe, and effective way to tour the next city you visit.
